Unusual options activity (UOA) occurs when a stock's options volume significantly exceeds its normal trading levels. Typically, traders look for volume that is 1.5x to 3x or more above the 20-day average. This elevated activity can signal that informed participants — institutional investors, hedge funds, or corporate insiders — are positioning ahead of a catalyst that hasn't been widely recognized by the market yet.

However, not all unusual activity is meaningful. A one-day volume spike could be noise from a large retail trader, portfolio rebalancing, or market maker hedging activity. The most significant unusual activity patterns share several characteristics: sustained elevation over multiple days, concentration in specific strikes rather than spread across the chain, building open interest (not just volume), and directional consistency between different moneyness levels.

Options Pilot's Activity pillar runs nine separate checks to distinguish meaningful unusual activity from noise. These include volume surge magnitude, OI build-up over 5 days, strike concentration percentage, multi-day persistence, trade quality (institutional presence), execution urgency, and flow conviction. When the Activity score reaches 80+, it means multiple checks are confirming that something genuinely unusual is happening — worth investigating further. When the score is around 50, it means normal trading with no edge to exploit.
