Typically, traders look for volume that is 1.5x to 3x or more above the 20-day average. This elevated activity can signal that informed participants — institutional investors, hedge funds, or corporate insiders — are positioning ahead of a catalyst that hasn't been widely recognized by the market yet.

However, not all unusual activity is meaningful. A one-day volume spike could be noise from a large retail trader, portfolio rebalancing, or market maker hedging activity. The most significant unusual activity patterns share several characteristics: sustained elevation over multiple days, concentration in specific strikes rather than spread across the chain, building open interest (not just volume), and directional consistency between different moneyness levels.
