Implied Volatility Term Structure

Which dates the options market prices a move into — forward IV between expiries, ranked every session

Implied volatility is not spread evenly across the calendar. Forward IV strips out the quiet days and asks what the market is charging for one stretch between two expiries — so a name can sit at a calm 23% for 30 days while pricing a violent two days around an earnings date. These are the names where that gap is widest right now, and the exact expiry each one points at.

Priced from the settled chain on 2026-11-02 · changes measured against 2026-10-30 · 2,210 names priced, 930 carrying a notable window, 101 of those on a window out past the nearest expiry and narrow enough to read.

Biggest moves since the prior session

Ranked on the change in the multiple, not the level: a biotech that always trades at 90% vol is not moving, while a 23%-vol industrial printing 3.3x into a two-day window is the signal. Rows marked “nearest expiry” sit on the front of the curve, where short-dated vol always runs hot — a jump there is worth seeing, but it is not the market picking a date.

Unusual for this name

Every other table here ranks the level, which ranks how volatile a business is: a biotech sits near the top most sessions because its curve is always humped. This one ranks the departure — today’s multiple against that same ticker’s own average over the sessions we hold, in standard deviations. A 1.5x window is ordinary for one name and unprecedented for another.

Read these z-scores loosely. The history behind them starts on 2026-09-08 and runs to 2026-11-02 — 40 sessions in total. That is a short baseline: with ten to twenty observations the average is noisy and the spread, which is the divisor, is noisier still. A z of 12 here means “never seen in the sessions we hold”, not a probability. Above about 4 the number cannot separate degrees at all. There is also no year-over-year or seasonal comparison available — the series does not reach back to a prior October or a prior earnings cycle, so nothing on this page is measured against one. A name needs at least 10 prior sessions to appear; 66 of the 2,210 priced names clear that bar.

The weeks the market is charging for

Windows that open at a later expiry, so the vol belongs to that stretch rather than to the front of the curve. A seven-day window in late October is an earnings week; the market is paying up for those days and not the ones on either side. Tight quotes first.

Narrow enough to name one session

The rare case: a window five days or fewer, sitting out in the calendar rather than at the front. Here the vol has nowhere else to go, so the date itself is the claim. There are usually only a handful.

How to read this

Hump is the forward IV across one window divided by that name’s own median window. It is a term-structure statistic, not a claim that a specific catalyst lands on that day — read the date as a date only where the window is narrow enough to name one.

“The week to Oct 30” is a window too wide to name a day. The vol is real and concentrated in that stretch, but any session inside it could be the cause, so the page declines to pick one. A single date appears only where the window is five days or fewer.

The nearest expiry is excluded from everything ranked on level. That first window has no earlier expiry to subtract from, so its forward IV is just the front contract’s at-the-money vol — and short-dated vol structurally sits above a name’s median window. On the 2026-11-02 session, 115 of the 121 windows narrow enough to name a date named the very next Friday. Publishing those as chosen dates would dress a calendar artefact as an event.

Wide quote marks a name whose at-the-money quote is wide enough that the vol is partly an artefact of the spread. Readable, but rank it below the rest. Implied vol is solved from the quote midpoint, so a wide spread inflates it and the error only ever points up — which is why the two history sections drop those names entirely rather than flagging them.

z is today’s multiple against that same ticker’s own average, in standard deviations — and it rests on 40 sessions of history beginning 2026-09-08. That is short. Treat it as a ranking of how far each name has stepped out of its own range, not as a probability, and read the session count in the table beside it. We cannot compare any of this to the same week a year or a quarter ago: the series does not go back that far, and no number on this page is measured against a seasonal baseline.

Agreement across names is the strongest thing here, and it is still only a date. Where several unrelated tickers each pin the same expiry with a narrow window, the date is observed. What happens on it is not: the page does not name a catalyst, and a window landing near an event you know about is a coincidence we have not verified.

Each ticker links to its own page, with implied move beside it for the full term structure, alongside the option chain and IV rank. Mechanics are in the implied vs historical volatility guide.
